A few site enhancements

Just a few little things added to the site.

I added a few links on the right to twitter, my Instagram gallery & deviantART gallery. I also updated the “About Me” page.

Deliveries!

So we are one week into the new year. Nothing much happening so far. It’s just back to work.

I’m taking part in fatmumslim‘s January Photo-a-Day Instagram challenge. I’m not always very good at sticking to these things, but because I use Instagram almost daily already, I thought it would be a good one to try. I only found out about it on the 4th so missed the first 3 days but have carried on anyway.

I discovered yesterday that I am already way more boke than I thought I was due to a wad of transactions going off my account in one go after the holiday break. So it’s going to be a very long and quiet month for me. Also a bunch of purchases that added to the lack of dosh arrived this week. corsets-uk had a sale with loads of corsets reduced to just £9.80! so I bought these 4. What a bargain!

In december I also bought 2 pairs of 8ga earskins for my 2nd lobe piercings. I got them in silver metallic & maroon pearl. Very nice!

and today my Kindle Gelaskin arrived. I’m very happy with this product, I now want to gelaskin everything! :)

So Long 2011, Welcome 2012…

So 2011 has gone. Time to look back in summary and see what was learned, experienced and acheived.

I was very lazy with blogging in 2011, and also photography with my Canon camera. I did still take a lot of photographs, but for that 2011 was the year of Instagram. What a magic iPhone App! I’m not going to bust into a review, so in short it is one of the few apps to earn a place on my homescreen that I use just about on a daily basis. The effects are amazing, yielding different results on different flavours of photograph and sharing over all my social network and sites is a complete breeze. That said I still adore my Canon and was lucky enough to be bought a zoom lens by my Dad when we were in South Africa (more on that later). I’ve only used it a couple of times but it’s a great lens and look forward to summer and getting outside with it some more.

Drowning Clock Flock

I have also been practically none existent on Livejournal. It used to be a daily essential but other things seemed to have crept in and nudged it over. News feeds being the main one. I  do miss reading what is happening in the lives of my few friends over there, I must make an effort to read it regularly again.

I also took up a few other creative hobbies. Nail art being a favourite. I can’t get enough of painting my nails in creative ways. I’m still a beginner, but am getting way better thanks to youtubers sharing their ideas.

Scrapbooking is another new one for me. I’ve always kept small tokens from holidays and outings, tickets and things, and figured scrapbooking would be a nice simple way to keep them together in a creative way, and also get to print and use some of the photos I take. I thought I’d start very simple but the lush papers, embelishments, stamps and tools soon had me in love and inspired. I’ve only done a few pages to date (Skyrim took over a couple of months ago), but I’m sure this is going to be a life-long hobby. I can get stuck into the spare room and just stay there all day thinking up ideas for a layout and choosing and placing embelishments. The amount of things you can do is never ending!

 Macayla Amsterdam

Over Easter Weekend Becky and I went up to Berwick-upon-Tweed. It’s where my mother was born, and some of my family still lives, including Becky’s sister (my cousin) Emma. It’s up north on the East coast just on the English side of the Scotland border. We took a girls road trip up (Fun!) and stayed with Emma and her family for the weekend. What a gorgeous little town. The beach is beautiful (despite the freezing waters!), and the view of the town and it’s 3 bridges from the river mouth is quite a sight. It was lovely to finally go there and see where my Mum is originally from, and especially with Becky. We had a great time.

btw: Another great iPhone app is Pano. I used it to make the above panoramas. It’s dreamy.

We did quite a bit of traveling in 2011. Of course we brought in the year in New York, then in June Pete turned 30 so I took him to Amsterdam for the weekend where we were joined by his sister and her GF. We stayed on a houseboat in the heart of the city and took in sights and experiences of the city with youthful abandon :)

In July Pete was also lucky enough to travel to Sweden for a family holiday with his parents and sister. Unfortunately I didn’t have any leave available to join them, but it was lovely for them to have a family holiday with just the 4 of them. Looking at Pete’s photos upon his return really made me want to go there one day. It looks so picturesque and peaceful. Very beautiful.

Then in September we were off to South Africa again. My ticket was a treat from my Parents so that I could be there for Macayla’s 1st Birthday. We also used the time to get as much wedding planning done as possible as, being there exactly the same time as our wedding in 2012, we could pick things like the flowers and such. We got LOADS done  and only have a few things left to sort out. We also had a family photo shoot with the wonderful Adrian Shields, who is to be out wedding photographer too. In June my parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary and Mark and I booked a family photo shoot for us all to go on as their gift. Those were by far my favourite 2 weeks of the whole year. Seeing my gourgous neice, Macayla, for the 1st time was fantastic. She really is a magical little gift in the family :)

My only body modification in 2011 was my Sternum Microdermal. I had wanted one for quite a while and decided to go for it when visiting my friend Beth in Brighton in April. I loved it! Unfortunately by October it was obviously slowly rejecting so I decided to remove it. I’m tempted to get it done again as it was one of my favourite piercings ever but I was always worrying about accidentally catching it, and the freedom from that constant worry once it was removed was a relief. It’s by far the prettiest piercings I have ever gotten but also the most worrisome :(

Another big change for me in 2011 was I changed jobs! After working in Accounts & Payroll at the plant hire conpany for 5 years I was more than ready to move on. A position opened for a Test Analyst in the team Pete works with, so I applied and got the job. It’s been a massive change from what I am used to. I’ve never worked for a massive corporation before, or part of such a large team, but I’m really enjoying it.  I feel like I’ve turned my brain on for the first time in years. It took me a while to settle in to the new environment and job but I’m finally getting there, and it’s great to work on such a young, relaxed, fun & dynamic team. I actually like working with Pete too :)

So all in all 2011 was a fantastic year, and I’m definitely looking forward to 2012 and OUR WEDDING!

UK Riots

I’m shocked and disgusted at these riots happening across London and other cities in England. Having grown up in South Africa and knowing how so many people in this world suffer and struggle every day for the most basic things in life, and these bastards live here in a First World country with access to everything they could ever need and then behave like that! It angers and saddens me. They should be forced into military service to learn respect and discipline.

Spring S.A.D.?

I don’t know if I’m just feeling homesick today, but I seem to be a bit depressed. I was just thinking that I kinda feel like my life is on hold and what a boring place this town is to live in. I was even thinking I miss living in London, and I haven’t felt that way since I left there 10 years ago. Hmmmm. I remember feeling a bit depressed at home the other night too and missing my friends and sunshine in South Africa. Normally I only feel this way in winter, so it seems a bit late in the year to be seasonal affective disorder.

April Outings

Sternum Microdermal

Sternum Microdermal

April was a busy month for us. After having a very quiet start to the year it almost seemed hectic. We were away from home for 3 of the weekends of April, and of course it was filled with a lot of bank holiday and therefore long weekends. It was fantastic. Sunday the 17th Pete had a Nin-jutsu grading that he had to go to Brighton for, and I took the opportunity to visit my dear friend, Beth, who lives there. We decided to head down the night before and booked a last minute hotel in Lindfield to save us the long drive down very early on Sunday morning. Pete dropped me off at the famous Pier and went off to Nin-jutsu, and I hooked up for a wonderful day with Beth. We walked around the pier and then Beth showed me around the gorgeous gardens around the palace and then treated me to the tour inside. It’s so incredibly breathtaking. If you are ever there, I urge you to visit. I’ve never been in such awe of interiors, especially the dining room. The entire palace is decorated in intricate oriental design and details. Hundreds of dragons, everywhere!
We then wandered around the bohemian shops of the lanes and  I took the opportunity to have my sternum microdermal done at Punktured. We had lunch, mango beer and had a great time catching up and chilling out. Great fun :)

The following weekend was Easter weekend and Becky and I road tripped up to the Scottish border to Berwick upon Tweed to stay with her sister (my cousin) and her family for the weekend. My Mum was born there and I’ve never been before, so it was great to finally go up. We were there for 2 night and got too see the lovely town, have a night on the piss, and spend a sunny day on the gorgeous beach taking in the stunning scenery and coastline. Such a beautiful place.

The last weekend was also a long weekend because of the Royal Wedding, and the May Day bank holiday. We watched the Royal wedding on Friday which I loved! Saturday Gemma and Neil joined us for some drinks, then Sunday we went up to Whitchurch to see Bergitte & Steve. We helped them out in the garden a bit, braai’ed in the evening and spent the night over. It was fantastic!

Pete and I also managed to find a few Geocaches while we were out and also stopped to walk around some WW2 Bunker ruins in Prees Higher Heath, which I’ve been wanting to do for ages.
So after the flurry of activity that was April, we’ve had a pretty relaxing May. Mostly staying at home. I’ve managed to get some important things done though. Plans have been made for Pete’s 30th next month, nothing I can mention though; and I’ve made a start of getting our wedding “Save The Date” cards sent out. I think I’m realising I need to start pulling my finger out and get going with plans for the wedding now though. Even though it’s over a year away, the more I can get done now, the less there will be to worry about later.

Sternum Microdermal

So I finally bit the bullet and had my Sternum Microdermal done!

My friend Beth lives near Brighton and she had previously mentioned a studio called Punktured. I’d looked them up online a while ago and was very happy with what I saw, and most pleased that they do microdermals using the punch method as this was my preferred method. Circumstances had it that I was able to visit her today (I live 3 hrs away) and decided to take the opportunity and inquire about getting it done. After a bit of a chat I decided to go ahead and they had time to do it right then.

J did it for me and the procedure itself was smooth and quick. She marked me up, erased, remarked and showed me. I asked for it to be moved a smidge to the right, which she happily did, and I gave the final approval to go ahead. She had me sit on the chair and then lowered me into a reclined position. She explained she was going to have a quick feel of the tissue in the area, which was very brief, then got the punch and asked if I was ready. She had the skin pinched and had me do the usual deep breath and punched on my slow exhale. The punch itself was fairly similar to getting pierced, a very quick pain but over as soon as it’s started. She held gauze on the new hole for a few seconds and dabbed the blood away. She told me she would do some gentle testing with the jewelry (she had in one of those purpose-made microdermal holders) to find the best position for the foot, and this was quick and I hardly felt it. She asked it I was ready for insertion and again had me take a deep breath. On my exhale she inserted the jewelry, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t hurt. I felt a very intense pain that radiated out to my armpits and lots of pressure, but again it was over as soon as it started and I didn’t even really have time to wince. A split second and it was in, and I think she may have put mild pressure of it for a few seconds immediately after to eased that brief sharp pain. She announced I was done and let me chill for a bit before slowly tilting the chair up again. After checking it out and grinning madly for a bit I thanked J and tipped her which she seemed genuinely flattered about.

The entire procedure from marking to “Ok Gina, you are done!” took exactly 5 minutes, I know from the photos’ EXIF data ;) and I would do it again at this wonderful shop without hesitation. Seriously, if you ever in the area just pop in even if only to say “Hi!” to the friendly staff. I’ve been to numerous piercing studios and this is one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. The staff were happy to chat and answered all my questions before hand, and once I committed and had signed the forms they make a point of using your first name, which I found to be a warming, friendly and personal touch that made me feel like I was their main focus while I was in their services and that they actually cared about me. I wasn’t rushed at all after the procedure and could take all the time I liked gathering myself and coo’ing over my new jewelry, and had a bit of chatter and a good laugh with J afterwards. All round fantastic! I’m very very happy with it :)
