House Move, Permanent Position @ Work, Persistent Cough & Running for Teenage Cancer Trust

I have lots to blog about as it’s been quite a while since my last proper blog post, again. I don’t know if I’ll get it all down now, but will have a go.

We have moved! In 2008 we moved into a block of flats which at the time was an upgrade from the downstairs flat (aka bottom half of a converted house) we first rented upon arrival in England. But after living there for nearly 4 years, we were really sick of the sight of the floral wallpaper and stained carpet. So were decided to look around at houses for rent and it turned out that one of our colleagues had a 2 bedroom double storey house to rent that was just becoming available. We took a look and decided to take it. No letting agent to go through any more, bonus! We had to buy a few appliances, so now own our own fridge-freezer and washing machine. I feel so grown up. lol! We moved in on the 28th April. It was a huge amount of hard work but so worth it! We’ve been here 1 month now and already it feel more like home than anywhere else we have lived. It’s great to live somewhere that we genuinely give a shit about and want to improve. We have our own garden and thus private outdoor area, a fireplace in the lounge, a large kitchen, neutral walls, great bathrooms, a fantastic hueg open grass belt literally 10 meters from our front door, and I finally have my dream bookcase from Ikea. I seriously couldn’t be happier. AND we finally got to give our shit letting agent the finger. Those arseholes were less than useless and I’m stoked to never have to deal with them ever again. They totally tried to rip us off with our deposit with supposed repairs to the shit flat, but Pete negotiated with the fuckwit owner and got most of it back. Though I didn’t want them to have a single penny of our money but if I had dealt with them again I would have gotten too angry to be reasonable, and then we wouldn’t have got anything. lol. Though we are still waiting for our agreed amount back and I look forward to phoning then tomorrow and asking where the hell our cheque is. Phew! Rant over šŸ™‚ So yes, moved, and very happy. šŸ™‚

I’m still enjoying my new job. The only aspect I don’t particularly enjoy is test scripting! šŸ˜› But I hear all my tester colleagues saying the same thing. Planning tests is fine, and probably the most challenging part of the job as I’m still learning, but scripting is just tedious. It basically consists of writing a set of instructions within the test management software. Depending on the type of test, it can be as simple as “click this, and this will happen”, and some tests can be so involved the script can end up quite lengthly. Then you may have over 100 tests to script for a particular piece of work. You get the idea. Running the tests themselves however I really enjoy. That’s when we actually get to find defects and report them for fixing. But I digress, I’m still enjoying it šŸ™‚ I’m only on contract at the moment and my 6 month contract was just renewed at the beginning of May. Now 2 permanent positions have opened because of other staff leaving, so I am in the process of applying for that. It’s definitely stressful as it’s a full reqruitment process happening, including CV & cover letter application, then an apptitude test and interview; and I HATE interviews šŸ™ but hopefully I will be successful and then I’ll be permanent and not have to worry about my job security, or doing another interview any time soon! *fingers crossed!*
Also work has been insanely busy and we’ve been doing loads of overtime. 2 weeks ago we worked until 9pm, and this was in the middle of dealing with the arsehole letting agents so I wasn’t such a happy camper. But the overtime pay certainly makes it worth while, and negates the pay cut I took for this job (which was worth it).

I have had a persistent cough for about 1.5 – 2 years. I had it once before and it lasted for about 2 years before going away. I’ve seen the doctor frequently about it, and had 2 endoscopies to check my throat and upperĀ oesophagus, and tried numerous treatments without much luck. I went back again 2 weeks ago and requested to try a nasal spray (again) as I’m conviced the cough is caused by mucus. So I’ve been using it for 2 weeks and I dare say it seems to be working! I can’t express the relief I feel to be able to go through the day and night without coughing to the point of nearly vomiting. It’s great. So fingers crossed I’ve finally found a treatment that doesn’t involve taking morphine based pills 4 times a day. šŸ™‚

Pete and I are taking part in a charity run with some of our colleaguesĀ (Please stop buy a sponsor me, every dollar, pound or rand makes a huge difference). The company we work for is teamed up with Teenage Cancer Trust as an official fundraiser, so a few of us that work together have decided to get our butts off the couch and do a 5 mile run to raise some funds. The run itself is happening on the 8th July, and I think Pete and I are the only ones who have been properly training for it. Christ, I NEED to, I’m so unfit! Since we now have a lovely area of open grassland next to our house it’s easy to go running after work, so we’ve been trying to run a few times a week. The first few runs we did I thought I was going to die, but slowly it’s starting to get easier and I’m starting to enjoy it! Hopefully I’ll improve my fitness and loose a few kgs for our wedding in September! Not long to go now!

Fatmumslim’s Instagram Photo a Day Challenge

Since the beginning of January I’ve been following and taking part in a Photo A Day Challenge started by fatmumslim on Instagram. I’ve found it easy to keep up, and a very fun way to get inspiration for photography, for me specifically iPhone photography which I’m normally doing daily anyway. The instagram community following her challenge has also proved a great source of inspiration, and a friendly and interactive place to be sharing. I’ve found some great followers and followees through the challenge šŸ™‚ Give it a go šŸ™‚

January Photo A Day Challenge

A few site enhancements

Just a few little things added to the site.

I added a few links on the right to twitter, my Instagram gallery & deviantART gallery. I also updated the “About Me” page.

Deliveries!

So we are one week into the new year. Nothing much happening so far. It’s just back to work.

I’m taking part in fatmumslim‘s January Photo-a-Day Instagram challenge. I’m not always very good at sticking to these things, but because I use Instagram almost daily already, I thought it would be a good one to try. I only found out about it on the 4th so missed the first 3 days but have carried on anyway.

I discovered yesterday that I am already way more boke than I thought I was due to a wad of transactions going off my account in one go after the holiday break. So it’s going to be a very long and quiet month for me. Also a bunch of purchases that added to the lack of dosh arrived this week. corsets-uk had a sale with loads of corsets reduced to just Ā£9.80! so I bought these 4. What a bargain!

In december I also bought 2 pairs of 8ga earskins for my 2nd lobe piercings. I got them in silver metallic & maroon pearl. Very nice!

and today my Kindle Gelaskin arrived. I’m very happy with this product, I now want to gelaskin everything! šŸ™‚

So Long 2011, Welcome 2012…

So 2011 has gone. Time to look back in summary and see what was learned, experienced and acheived.

I was very lazy with blogging in 2011, and also photography with my Canon camera. I did still take a lot of photographs, but for that 2011 was the year of Instagram. What a magic iPhone App! I’m not going to bust into a review, so in short it is one of the few apps to earn a place on my homescreen that I use just about on a daily basis. The effects are amazing, yielding different results on different flavours of photograph and sharing over all my social network and sites is a complete breeze. That said I still adore my Canon and was lucky enough to be bought a zoom lens by my Dad when we were in South Africa (more on that later). I’ve only used it a couple of times but it’s a great lens and look forward to summer and getting outside with it some more.

I have also been practically none existent on Livejournal. It used to be a daily essential but other things seemed to have crept in and nudged it over. News feeds being the main one. I Ā do miss reading what is happening in the lives of my few friends over there, I must make an effort to read it regularly again.

I also took up a few other creative hobbies. Nail art being a favourite. I can’t get enough of painting my nails in creative ways. I’m still a beginner, but am getting way better thanks to youtubers sharing their ideas.

Scrapbooking is another new one for me. I’ve always kept small tokens from holidays and outings, tickets and things, and figured scrapbooking would be a nice simple way to keep them together in a creative way, and also get to print and use some of the photos I take. I thought I’d start very simple but the lush papers, embelishments, stamps and tools soon had me in love and inspired. I’ve only done a few pages to date (Skyrim took over a couple of months ago), but I’m sure this is going to be a life-long hobby. I can get stuck into the spare room and just stay there all day thinking up ideas for a layout and choosing and placing embelishments. The amount of things you can do is never ending!

Ā MacaylaĀ Amsterdam

Over Easter Weekend Becky and I went up to Berwick-upon-Tweed. It’s where my mother was born, and some of my family still lives, including Becky’s sister (my cousin) Emma. It’s up north on the East coast just on the English side of the Scotland border. We took a girls road trip up (Fun!) and stayed with Emma and her family for the weekend. What a gorgeous little town. The beach is beautiful (despite the freezing waters!), and the view of the town and it’s 3 bridges from the river mouth is quite a sight. It was lovely to finally go there and see where my Mum is originally from, and especially with Becky. We had a great time.

btw: Another great iPhone app is Pano. I used it to make the above panoramas. It’s dreamy.

Ā We did quite a bit of traveling in 2011. Of course we brought in the year in New York, then in June Pete turned 30 so I took him to Amsterdam for the weekend where we were joined by his sister and her GF. We stayed on a houseboat in the heart of the city and took in sights and experiences of the city with youthful abandon šŸ™‚

In July Pete was also lucky enough to travel to Sweden for a family holiday with his parents and sister. Unfortunately I didn’t have any leave available to join them, but it was lovely for them to have a family holiday with just the 4 of them. Looking at Pete’s photos upon his return really made me want to go there one day. It looks so picturesque and peaceful. Very beautiful.

Then in September we were off to South Africa again. My ticket was a treat from my Parents so that I could be there for Macayla’s 1st Birthday. We also used the time to get as much wedding planning done as possible as, being there exactly the same time as our wedding in 2012, we could pick things like the flowers and such. We got LOADS done Ā and only have a few things left to sort out. We also had a family photo shoot with the wonderful Adrian Shields, who is to be out wedding photographer too. In June my parentsĀ celebratedĀ their 40th weddingĀ anniversaryĀ and Mark and I booked a family photo shoot for us all to go on as their gift. Those were by far my favourite 2 weeks of the whole year. Seeing my gourgous neice, Macayla, for the 1st time was fantastic. She really is aĀ magicalĀ little gift in the family šŸ™‚

My only body modification in 2011 was my Sternum Microdermal. I had wanted one for quite a while and decided to go for it when visiting my friend Beth in Brighton in April. I loved it! Unfortunately by October it was obviously slowly rejecting so I decided to remove it. I’m tempted to get it done again as it was one of my favourite piercings ever but I was always worrying about accidentally catching it, and the freedom from that constant worry once it was removed was a relief. It’s by far theĀ prettiestĀ piercings I have ever gotten but also the most worrisome šŸ™

Ā Ā

Ā Ā Ā Ā

Another big change for me in 2011 was I changed jobs! After working in Accounts & Payroll at the plant hire conpany for 5 years I was more than ready to move on. A position opened for a Test Analyst in the team Pete works with, so I applied and got the job. It’s been a massive change from what I am used to. I’ve never worked for a massive corporation before, or part of such a large team, but I’m really enjoying it. Ā I feel like I’ve turned my brain on for the first time in years. It took me a while to settle in to the new environment and job but I’m finally getting there, and it’s great to work on such a young, relaxed, fun & dynamic team.Ā I actually like working with Pete too šŸ™‚

So all in all 2011 was a fantastic year, and I’m definitely looking forward to 2012 and OUR WEDDING!

UK Riots

I’m shocked and disgusted at these riots happening across London and other cities in England. Having grown up in South Africa and knowing how so many people in this world suffer and struggle every day for the most basic things in life, and these bastards live here in a First World country with access to everything they could ever need and then behave like that! It angers and saddens me. They should be forced into military service to learn respect and discipline.
